New Xbox 360 Portable Revision 5 (http://benheck.com/07-01-2009/new-xbox-360-portable-revision-3)

http://benheck.com/Games/Xbox360/rev5/xrev5_hero.jpg (http://benheck.com/Games/Xbox360/rev5/xrev5_hero_big.jpg)
Click image for super-sized, suitable for framing version.
A few months ago I announced that I would be building a few more Xbox 360 portables, and well, here’s one now! While it looks similar to the previous model it’s once again a from-scratch redesign and has the following features:
Built-in Ethernet port, finally.
Built-in WiFi adapter, as usual.
Digital pushbutton volume control rather than a clunky knob. I used a different audio amp as well, and it sounds a lot better.
Flush-mount DVD door and side panels (such as the memory card slots)
IR sensor for the remote control.
Two user USB ports.
More air holes!
Jasper motherboard.
For more pictures, info and a demo video, click below. Both of these new units are spoken for (commission) but later this summer, after I take a break, I will probably be taking on new work so stay tuned!
http://benheck.com/Games/Xbox360/rev5/xrev5_11.jpg
Here’s the unit open. The internal layout is almost identical to the previous model, though now there’s a better bracket to hold the fans, the hard drive connector is aligned via the case, and the DVD door is thick like the side of the case but sits flush inside it. Again the heat sink are supplemented with copper - the wonder metal that works wonders.
http://benheck.com/Games/Xbox360/rev5/xrev5_10.jpg
Testing the unit using Street Fighter 4. This is a good game for that because you can set the computer to just fight itself, over and over, so the system is doing something without any input.
http://benheck.com/Games/Xbox360/rev5/xrev5_4.jpg
The fabled Ethernet port. Strangely Menards is the best place to find Ethernet ports, they have a wall-jack unit you can get for like 5 bucks. A regular cable plugs into the Xbox motherboard, then is wired to this plug. Some plugs and jacks have internal circuitry, which we don’t want, so this is the simplest solution.
http://benheck.com/Games/Xbox360/rev5/xrev5_8.jpg
DVD drive open with the flush-mount door. Actually my friend Dave Campbell saw this while I was working on it and said “Why not make the DVD door flush?” and I said “Say, that’s a good idea!” and so it was. I guess I owe him a can of pop or something now.
http://benheck.com/Games/Xbox360/rev5/xrev5_7.jpg
Side view of unit. The memory card ports and vent are similar to the last model, though now this plate is flush with the side of the unit.
http://benheck.com/Games/Xbox360/rev5/xrev5_1.jpg
Unit with lid closed. The screws to hold the lid together are now on the inside and countersunk, much like a normal laptop.
http://benheck.com/Games/Xbox360/rev5/xrev5_3.jpg
LCD controls. Once again I’ve used the Gateway 1775W widescreen 17″ monitor. It has DVI in, which is pin compatible with the 360’s HDMI, and the resolution is exactly 1280×720, unlike most computer monitors.
http://benheck.com/Games/Xbox360/rev5/xrev5_5.jpg
Come to think of it, this is the only white-colored Xbox 360 laptop I’ve built since the original.

http://thebbps.com/images/stories/2009/06/consolemodspart1.jpg
Afew days ago I scoured the Internet for the best, worst, and strangest (http://thebbps.com/articles/content/in-your-faceplates.html) Xbox 360 faceplates; some were awe-inspiring, some not so much. Now I’m taking console customization to the next level with a new series dedicated to several seriously awesome console mods (which are way cooler than faceplates, right?). The first part of this series will be all about the Xbox 360, followed by the top Wii and PS3 mods. So read on to see the five best Xbox 360 mods, in order of their level of win and awesome.
#5: Retro Arcade This one made the list because it brought back long lost feelings of spending entire evenings at the arcades investing a tons of quarters on various games, particularly Gauntlet. I must've spent a small fortune on that game, though I never beat it. Anyways, this clever console mod by ShaolinDrunkard (http://gizmodo.com/370568/arcade+style-mod-gives-xbox-360-controller-glowing-buttons) integrates the retro 80's arcade feel with everyone's favorite unreliable console.
http://thebbps.com/images/stories/2009/06/retro1.jpg
http://thebbps.com/images/stories/2009/06/retro2.jpg
#2: Gators of War
Alright, alright, I know that title sucks. Forgive my lack of creativity in naming this duo of mods by dfw monkie (http://forums.llamma.com/viewtopic.php?t=20672) who has created a Gears of War mod and a rather creepy alligator one as well (that eye is extremely unsettling).

http://thebbps.com/images/stories/2009/06/gears2.jpg
It even lights up, increasing it's level of awesome tenfold!
http://thebbps.com/images/stories/2009/06/gears3.jpg
#3: Feeling Blue?
Not only does this mod look cool, it also solves the console's overheating problem with an internal liquid cooling system. Now that's a real mod: something that improves the look as well as the performance of the console. Bravo, Dano 2K0 (http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEVpZZAklllHlcrxQY.php). Well done good sir.

http://thebbps.com/images/stories/2009/06/blue2.jpg
#2: The Mod to Die For
But it looks as if someone beat me to it. I'm a big fan of blood and gore, I like to have it in all aspects of life. Unfortunately, I haven't yeat foudn a way to bring my love of all things scary to my gaming consoles, as I have absolutely no modding talent whatsoever (my broken PS2 can attest to that fact). R. Midian Muir (http://www.midianad.com/) has solved my little problem with this beautifully brutal and bloody mod for the 360. I want this. Bad.

#1: The Console from City 17
If Gordon Freeman was a gamer, this is the console he would use. This one makes #1 not only because it is freaking awesome, or because of its exvellent use of the orange/grey color scheme, but also because it has something to do with Half-Life... Half-Life stuff gets an instant win in my opinion. Think I'm bias? You're probably right. I' be first in line to buy this console should PinPoint (http://www.bit-tech.net/news/modding/2006/11/21/half-life_2_xbox_mod/1) decide to begin mass producing these, and I recommend that he bundles it with a copy of The Orange Box.

Transformers "All Spark" Xbox 360 Mod
All the power of Cybertron used to power Mass Effect 2.
Due to all the madness from CES and hype surrounding the next wave of tech from Apple, we haven't had too much time to go back to our roots and share some of the best game gear customizations from around the web. One modded Xbox 360 case is so badass though, we are tossing aside any tablet rumors for at least the next 20 minutes and bringing you the awesomeness that is the Transformers-inspired All Spark console.
http://gearmedia.ign.com/gear/image/article/106/1062586/transformers-inspired-all-spark-custom-console-20100121051327403.jpg
Designed by a modder with the alias givintats, the All Spark case is a standard functioning Xbox 360 system that just happens to look like it has enough juice to power the universe.
The shell is made of basic plywood covered with self-hardening clay, after which the master crafter hand-carved some glyphs into the material.
Red and blue LED lights can be switched on/off at any time, making the setup look especially cool when gaming in a dark room while wearing your Autobot pajamas.

Students build Laptop Xbox 360 which looks quite good
http://m2.n4g.com/8/News/493000/493224_1_hs.jpg
Benjamin Heckendorn, the famous Xbox to Laptop (http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=36855&start=0) modder has inspired a few college students to create a damn good Xbox 360 Laptop.
When I first saw the thumbnail of the laptop, I thought it was an Alienware shell, but it turns out everything is custom. It features a 17 inch monitor, a Jasper Xbox 360, keyboard, wireless network adapter for online gameplay and much more.
Since this system is up for sale, they have thrown a couple extras such as 12 months of Xbox Live Gold access and receipts/documentation verifying its originality.
This model is up for sale on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Xbox-360-Laptop-Ultimate-Gaming-Machine_W0QQitemZ170459879658QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVi deo_Games?hash=item27b03358ea#ht_622wt_917) starting at $1,950.
Full progress posts were published on their blog documenting the step-by-step process of construction with lots of pretty pics which are viewable here (http://360laptop.blogspot.com/).
Also, you can check out the informative vid below.

Rocker/ Case Modder Kneivel put together this ingenious home arcade cabinet by taking a stack of Marshall amp cases and transforming them into a Guitar Hero themed gaming system.
http://technabob.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/marshall_guitar_hero_casemod.jpg
The system is made from 3 individual cabinets which can be disassembled in case he wants to taking the show on tour. Gaming is powered by a PlayStation 2, preloaded with all of the Guitar Hero games on the hard drive.
http://technabob.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/gh_casemod_top.jpg
The top cabinet has the left and right speakers as well as a cool backlit GH marquee, while the middle tier houses a heavyweight 27-inch Toshiba CRT.
http://technabob.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/gh_casemod_bottom.jpg
The bottom cabinet contains a Logitech Z2300 subwoofer for some serious low-end, as well as the PS2 system that powers the whole rig.
:megaphonebone: So; let's Rock'n Roll!
